You must have read about the basics of critical illness plans or insurance and why it makes sense to have it in your insurance portfolio. I did a small comparison of the policies then but, now following it up with a more recent one, visually. Here is the Comparison of Critical Illness Plans in India updated in 2020.
It must be noted that I have not covered each and every insurer in this but only some that I could find data for. This in no way implies that those that are missing from the list are to be ignored. Like any financial product or any product in the offing, investors needs to do due diligence and adequate research before buying the product. Use this guide only as a reckoner.
If you have any suggestions, kindly flag it off via comments and I will try by best to incorporate them.

Fantastic infographic. You are a master of this medium. I disagree with the last statement. Good habits have nothing to with probability of getting CIs.
My two cents reg. CI policies. Before taking this, one should take a good hard look at family history. Has anyone had any kind of CI. If there is a history of some illness*. So the policy we take should have the CIs in ones family history.
Claiming for CI is a very different ball game than term insurance or even accident insurance. According to Ramesh Mangal (a doctor and personal finance enthusiast) insurers have a narrow definition of many CIs. So when you say heart attack it should not be mistaken as some kind of umbrella cover as there are different kind of heart attacks and many may/will not be covered.
Take the policy document to a doctor and get his/her opinion.
Unfortunately, I myself am an example of this. I have an illness which is not covered by CI. However in general people with this illness cannot do their regular work. So there is a lot of grey area.
If a person has access to some lump sum amount and has the discipline to invest this and tag to a medical corpus than a CI cover is not needed. The premium which can be hefty can also be added to the medical corpus.
* one should consider taking a DNA analysis for a probability of getting a CI. This is what Angelina Jolie did. Googles co-founder has the Parkinsons gene and has 50% chance of getting it. This gives us a probability of what to expect in the future (the unexpected is always there). DNA test cost about 25-30K. Well worth it if there is a history of CI in the family.

Pattu thanks for your detailed reply. I concur with what you have written here. The fact that insurers have a limited definition of CIs is well known. I know planners who recommend not to take CI and instead allocate corpus to met the emergency.
Interestingly, your comments are forming the basis of my next post 🙂

Funny I just finished writing a post expanding my above comment 🙂
Please fix the basics of critical illness insurance link. I will cite both( this and the present) links in the post
Arup says
Pattu – good analysis and suggestion of DNA test. Not sure though how easy and user friendly is this and getting the test done here in our country.

I couldn’t understand heal or tail in your website. I thought you would give the premiums of various insurers but nothing of that sort but just headlines only. What I would like to know is that I am 67 years and my wife is 57 years. We are contemplating to have critical illness policy. Please let me have the details for same.
pattu says
Dear Mr. Jegannathan,
At 67, you are unlikely to get a CI policy. Even for your wife the premium will be pretty steep. Suggest you focus on allocating a corpus for health care.
TheWealthWisher says
As Pattu says, CI at this age is either not an option or going to come at a price you would not like to pay…
pattu says
Thank Arup. There is at least one firm in India which does this. It costs around 15K or so. One needs to provide a saliva sample.
Anshuman says
Hi, pls also compare ICICI Prudential’s Crisis Cover in comparasion to the other insurers mentioned in your post.. I found that it covers 35 diseases and seems to be good. Would like to know your thoughts..
Yogesh Shah says
Which is the best available plan currently for a 30 year old guy? Should we prefer from Life Insurance Company or General Insurance Company?
Madhupam Krishna says
No doubt that you should go with General Insurance companies only. They are cheap and offer wide coverage. You may check Religare Critical Illness Policy & Apollo Munich Optima Vital.
